On June 17, 2026, JSC "Production Association "Northern Machine-Building Enterprise" (NSR, part of JSC "United Shipbuilding Corporation" - USC) hosted a solemn ceremony of laying the foundation stone for the Russian Navy multipurpose nuclear submarine "Murmansk" (serial number 169) - the ninth ship of the modified project 08851 (project 885M; code "Ash-M"). This is the first nuclear-powered submarine of this project, laid down after a six-year hiatus.

The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by Admiral Alexander Moiseev, Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy, Andrey Puchkov, Director General of the USC, and Mikhail Budnichenko, Director General of the NSR.
The lead nuclear-powered submarine of the fourth generation of the Project 885 series (code "Yasen") K-560 Severodvinsk (serial number 160) was laid down at the NSR on December 21, 1993 and handed over to the Russian Navy for trial operation on June 17, 2014. The 885 project, as well as its upgrades, were developed at JSC St. Petersburg Marine Bureau of Mechanical Engineering "Malakhit" USC.
Further construction of the series is carried out at the NSR according to the upgraded project 08851 (code "Yasen-M"), according to which the first nuclear submarine K-561 Kazan (factory number 161) was laid down on July 24, 2009, which was withdrawn from the NSR workshop on March 31, 2017, launched on April 8, 2017. She entered factory sea trials on September 24, 2018 and was commissioned into the Russian Navy on May 7, 2021.
On November 9, 2011, the Russian Ministry of Defense signed a contract with JSC United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC) for the construction of five serial nuclear submarines of Project 08851 (Yasen-M) with serial numbers 162, 163, 164, 165 and 166.
As part of the aforementioned 2011 contract, the NSR completed the construction of the first serial nuclear-powered submarine of project 08851 K-573 Novosibirsk (serial number 162), which was laid down on July 26, 2013, decommissioned on December 25, 2019, entered factory sea trials on July 1, 2021 and was commissioned by the Navy. On December 21, 2021, she joined the Pacific Fleet. On September 28, 2022, Novosibirsk, having completed an inter-fleet transfer from the Northern to the Pacific Fleet, arrived at its permanent base in Kamchatka.
The second ship under the 2011 contract, K-571 Krasnoyarsk (serial number 163) of the modified project 08851, was laid down in Severodvinsk on July 27, 2014, decommissioned on July 30, 2021, and entered factory sea trials on June 26, 2022. The Krasnoyarsk joined the Navy on December 11, 2023, and on September 24, 2024, after making an inter-fleet transition from the Northern to the Pacific Fleet, arrived at its permanent base in Kamchatka.
The third ship under this contract, K-562 Arkhangelsk (serial number 164), was laid down in Severodvinsk on March 19, 2015. The Arkhangelsk's withdrawal ceremony from the NSR workshop took place on November 29, 2023, and the ship sailed for factory sea trials for the first time on June 11, 2024. December 27, 2024 Arkhangelsk html" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">joined the Northern Fleet of the Russian Navy.
The fourth ship under this contract, K-572 Perm (serial number 165), was laid down in Severodvinsk on July 29, 2016. The nuclear submarine Perm was withdrawn from the NSR boathouse on March 27, 2025. At the decommissioning ceremony, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced via videoconference that Perm had become the first multi-purpose submarine armed with Zircon hypersonic cruise missiles. On August 23, 2025, Perm entered testing, which it is still undergoing. It is reported that the Perm is intended for the Pacific Fleet.
The construction of the Ulyanovsk nuclear submarine (serial number 166), laid down on July 28, 2017, is also continuing under the 2011 contract for the NSR.
In June 2019, the Russian Ministry of Defense signed a contract with USC for the construction of two more serial nuclear-powered submarines of project 08851 (Yasen-M), which were officially laid down at the NSR on July 20, 2020 under the names Voronezh and Vladivostok (factory numbers 167 and 168), with contractual delivery dates. The years 2027 and 2028.
Now, six years later, the Murmansk nuclear submarine (serial number 169) has been laid down under a new contract at the NSR.
