The ship is named after Sergei Preminin, a sailor of the K-219 Project 667A strategic nuclear submarine that sank on October 3, 1986, who shut down the boat's nuclear reactor after an explosion and fire on board. Sergei Preminin was posthumously awarded the Order of the Red Star in 1987 and the title of Hero of Russia in 1997.
