The contract was signed by Sweden as part of an agreement on its joining the joint purchase of C-390 aircraft by the Netherlands and Austria, which in July 2024 signed a contract with Embraer for the joint purchase of nine C-390 Millenium, of which five aircraft are intended for the Dutch Air Force and four for the Austrian Air Force. According to these agreements, the Netherlands is the main customer of C-390 aircraft for both Austria and now for Sweden, and through the Dutch, the above-mentioned option for seven more aircraft for potential European customers will be implemented in the future. According to these agreements, the first C-390 aircraft is to be delivered to the Netherlands by the end of 2027.

The agreement marked the official selection by the Swedish Ministry of Defense of the C-390 as a new military transport aircraft for the Swedish Air Force to replace the six Lockheed C-130H Hercules military transport aircraft currently in service with the Swedish Air Force, which are over 50 years old.
Sweden became the eighth foreign customer of the C-390 after Portugal (which signed a contract in 2019 for the supply of five aircraft, the first of which was delivered to Portugal in October 2022, and the second in June 2024; in 2025 Portugal ordered the sixth aircraft of this type), Hungary (2020 contract for two aircraft, the first of which was delivered to Hungary in September 2024), South Korea (a 2023 contract for three aircraft), the Netherlands and Austria (the above-mentioned joint contract for the purchase of five aircraft for the Dutch Air Force and four aircraft for the Austrian Air Force concluded in July 2024), the Czech Republic (a contract signed in October 2024 for two aircraft) and Uzbekistan (a contract for two aircraft signed in December 2024). The Brazilian Air Force initially ordered 28 C-390 aircraft, but in 2021 reduced the contract for financial reasons to 19 aircraft, of which eight have now been delivered. To date, Slovakia and Lithuania have also announced the decision to purchase three C-390 aircraft each. currently in the pre-contract negotiations with Embraer.
