The strategic nuclear submarine Tennessee of the Ohio type of the US Navy has received a passive Large Vertical Array (LVA) sonar system that provides an almost 360-degree view, which reduces the "blind spot" area in the aft part of the submarine, writes The Drive.
The publication, calling this submarine "the most destructive weapon on Earth," notes that the new sonar probably works at medium and high frequencies. According to The Drive, the improvement will allow this submarine to better detect enemy submarines.
In addition, LVA will receive promising submarines of the Virginia type.
In November last year, the CEO of BWX Technologies, Rex Geveden , revealed part of the plans for a new generation of submarines of the US Navy. According to the head of the company that produces nuclear reactors for American submarines and aircraft carriers, the new submarine will be comparable in diameter to the promising Columbia-type ships, whose hull width reaches 12.8 meters.
In February 2020, the US Navy Research Institute announced that the Virginia-type submarines will receive non-nuclear hypersonic missiles, which are being created under the Conventional Prompt Strike (CPS) program.
