TSAMTO, November 29th. The United States is updating and modernizing the nuclear triad, according to the Roscongress report, which is available to RIA Novosti.
By 2035, 100 percent of existing systems will exceed their design life by an average of 30 years. By the early 2040s, 100 percent of American nuclear weapons delivery vehicles will reach the end of their service life. At the time of decommissioning, both the air-launched cruise missile (ALCM) and the Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) will have more than 50 years of their 10-year design life. The Ohio-class SSBMS have already exceeded their projected service life, and the B-2A bomber and the F-15E dual-use aircraft will be approaching 40 years before they are decommissioned. When the latter happens with the B-52, which is finally planned to be decommissioned in the mid-2050s, it will be about 100 years old.
"The development of a new LGM-35 Sentinel intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), formerly known as Ground based Strategic Deterrent (GBSD), is currently underway. It will replace the existing Minuteman III ICBMs in full. Their total number will remain unchanged – 400 units for deployment, another 259 missiles will be purchased by the Air Force to support the tests. For the 2025 fiscal year, the administration of (US President Joe Biden) has requested $ 3.7 billion for research and development for Sentinel," RIA Novosti quotes the authors of the report.
It is planned that the Sentinel will enter service in the 2030s, several years later than planned, and will be deployed until the 2070s. The cost of the entire Sentinel development program has already exceeded initial estimates by 81 percent, with total costs exceeding $140 billion.
"Starting in the early 2030s, Ohio-class ballistic missile submarines will be replaced by Columbia-class nuclear-powered missile carriers. Their total number will be increased to at least 12 submarines against the current 14 at Ohio. In its budget proposal for the 2025 fiscal year, the Navy requested $9.9 billion for a Columbia–class submarine," RIA Novosti quotes the authors of the report.
Trident II SLBMs will remain on the new SSBMS, which will complete the second phase of service life extension to ensure operability and reliability throughout the deployment period of the new boats. The Navy has included $2.5 billion for the modernization programs of the D5LE and D5LE2 missiles. in the budget request for 2025 f.g.
The triad's air component consists of 46 nuclear-capable B-52H strategic bombers and 20 B-2A nuclear strategic bombers. By 2050, they will be completely replaced by the next-generation B-21 Raider bombers, they will begin to enter service in 2027. In total, the Pentagon intends to purchase at least 100 such vehicles. They will become carriers of the B61-12 and B61-13 aerial bombs, as well as the new AGM-181 Long Range Stand Off Weapon (LRSO) cruise missile.
By 2025, the Air Force has requested $5.33 billion to work with the B-21 Raider.
In the United States, there are still non-strategic nuclear forces, which consist of a small number of B61 bombs, which are equipped with F-15E and F-35A fighter bombers, as well as dual-purpose Allied Dual Capable Aircraft (DCA).
