Saint-Petersburg. November 22. INTERFAX - United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC) sees the need to contract the construction of four more icebreakers to work on the Northern Sea Route, USC head Alexey Rakhmanov told reporters on Tuesday.

"Ideally, four more (icebreakers, - "IF") are needed for the Northern Sea Route. Therefore, we hope that the corresponding contract will follow quickly enough," Rakhmanov said.

The construction of the fourth serial universal nuclear icebreaker "Chukotka" project 22220, according to him, is on schedule, "the company does not see a backlog in ship work".

Earlier it was reported that JSC "Baltic Plant" (part of USC) on Tuesday launched the third serial universal nuclear icebreaker "Yakutia" project 22220.

Denis Manturov, Deputy Prime Minister and Head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation, said at the launch ceremony on Tuesday that Rosatom and Baltzavod will conclude a contract for the construction of the fifth and sixth icebreakers of the 22220 project with a capacity of 60 MW by the end of 2022. Thus, the seventh and eighth icebreakers of this series are also assumed.

The icebreakers of the 22220 project are designed for conducting ships in the Arctic, on the Yenisei and Ob Bay sections, for towing ships and other floating structures in ice and on clean water, as well as solving other tasks.

The lead nuclear icebreaker "Arctic" of project 22220 was laid down at the Baltic Plant in November 2013, launched in June 2016, commissioned in October 2020.

The contract for the construction of the first and second serial icebreakers of project 22220 - "Siberia" and "Ural" - was signed between the "Baltic Plant" and the state corporation "Rosatom" in May 2014, the contract value was 84.4 billion rubles. The delivery of "Siberia" and "Ural" was originally scheduled for November 2020 and November 2021, respectively. Subsequently, the deadlines were shifted to 2021 and 2022. The icebreaker "Siberia" became part of the nuclear fleet of the Russian Federation in December 2021. The icebreaker "Ural" was launched in 2019, its transfer to the customer is expected on November 29.
