Severstal has started shipping the first bimetallic sheets for the construction of the outer skin of the forward hull of the main linear nuclear icebreaker Rossiya (project 10510 LK-120 I, cipher "Leader"). The ice protection of the nuclear icebreaker, the so-called ice belt of the vessel, will be made of bimetal. This is the reinforced lower part of the hull, which directly resists the ice.
Bimetal was produced at mill 5000 of the sheet rolling shop of the Severstal production site in Kolpino using a new method of batch rolling. The package consists of a PCE500W shipboard as a base and a stainless steel cladding layer. The final processing of steel sheets was carried out in the metal processing workshop (CPM, former SMC-Kolpino, part of Severstal).
"Especially for this project, in less than six months, a new site for the assembly of bimetallic packages was organized at the Severstal production site in Kolpino. And in October, the modernization of equipment for accelerating the stripping of the main layer of bimetallic sheets in the thickness range from 10 to 250 mm was completed at the new site, which will increase production volumes by 0.9 thousand tons per year. The processing time of one sheet has been reduced from 56 to 8.5 hours," said Dmitry Vanev, Head of rolled pipe production, General Director of the Izhora Pipe Plant.
Bimetallic sheets fully comply with the requirements of the Rules of the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RMRS).
In total, 100 bimetallic sheets with a size of 3200 by 12000 mm will be shipped within the framework of the won tender.
For the construction of the icebreaker "Russia", Severstal also continues to supply high-strength D40 grade ship steel, high strength and improved weldability with a guarantee of resistance to layered breaks of the E500W Arctic design (Arc). The production of rolled metal is provided by the mills 2000 and 2800 of the Cherepovets Metallurgical Combine, as well as the mill 5000 of the Severstal production site in Kolpino.
Severstal is now the main supplier of rolled metal for the construction of an icebreaker, including fully meeting the need for shipboard for the construction of mortgage sections.
Bimetal-based solutions are widely used in other industries, including chemical, energy and oil and gas engineering, and also have significant potential in road construction and transportation of hydrocarbons. See the discussion of opportunities and solutions based on Severstal products.
