Triad in action
All components of the Russian nuclear triad are involved in the strategic exercises "Thunder-2022": strategic missile forces, submarine forces and long-range aviation.
On Wednesday, on the first day of the exercises, a training of strategic deterrence forces was held under the leadership of the President, during which missile launches were worked out.
— Comrade Supreme Commander—in-Chief, in accordance with the training plan of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, a training on the management of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation is being conducted under your leadership, during which the tasks of delivering a massive nuclear strike by strategic offensive forces in response to an enemy nuclear strike will be worked out, - Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu reported to the head of state.
The Yars intercontinental ballistic missile was launched from the Plesetsk State test cosmodrome at the Kura test site in Kamchatka. And a sea-based ballistic missile "Sineva" was fired from the Barents Sea at this destination. In addition, long-range aviation has worked out launches of air-launched cruise missiles.
The Chief of the General Staff, Army General Valery Gerasimov, said that the Yars missile system, the Tula submarine and Tu-95MS bombers participated in the training.
"During the event, the level of preparedness of the military command bodies and the skills of the senior and operational staff in organizing the management of troops were checked," the Kremlin's press service reported.
As a result of the maneuvers, all tasks were completed. The launched missiles reached the targets, confirming the specified characteristics.
— This time, the exercises of the strategic forces are devoted to an unusual topic, this did not seem to have happened before: they trained to deliver a massive retaliatory strike against a nuclear strike on the territory of Russia, — Dmitry Kornev, editor of the Militaryrussia portal, told Izvestia. — Such a legend has not been heard before. During such exercises, in addition to single launches of missiles of various types, tests of the combat control system of strategic nuclear forces are carried out. It is used to deliver orders from the Supreme Commander-in-Chief and the General Staff to strategic missile launchers.
According to the expert, such exercises should be conducted from time to time and there are several reasons for this.
— First of all, we need to train. The second point is that the training takes place against the background of NATO nuclear exercises in Europe," Dmitry Kornev explained. — I think this coincidence is not accidental. NATO is training, we are also training. We demonstrate the readiness of our strategic nuclear forces for any eventuality. And besides, on days when there is a special military operation, the exercises of the strategic nuclear forces show that it is not necessary for some third forces to get into the course of the operation.

The NATO nuclear deterrence exercise Steadfast Noon with the participation of 14 countries has been taking place since October 17. The alliance announced training flights, in particular, over Belgium, the North Sea and the UK. NATO noted that the maneuvers are planned and are not related to any current events in the world. They should end on October 30.
— The military doctrine of Russia proceeds from the fact that we do not deliver the first, disarming or some other nuclear strike, - former Deputy Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation Sergei Ordzhonikidze told Izvestia. — We launch a nuclear strike in the event of an attack on our country, with an existential threat. And the United States does not have this. And, practicing attacks on our country, they follow the concept of a preemptive strike. The fact that the Russian nuclear triad was trained is a kind of response from the United States. So that they don't forget that there can be no winners in a nuclear war. Because I have the impression that the further they go, the more they proceed from the illusion of victory in a nuclear war.
Planned exercises of strategic forces in Russia are held regularly. The last time the training took place in February. Then, together with the head of the Russian state, they were watched by the President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko. The exercises were held in two stages. At the first stage, actions using "weapons of increased potential danger" were practiced, and at the second — "authorization and massive use of strategic offensive forces in a counter-strike". First, the Navy ships launched Kalibr cruise missiles and hypersonic Zircons. At the Kapustin Yar training ground, Iskander tactical complexes were fired by ground-based cruise missiles. The aircraft of the aerospace forces successfully used hypersonic aeroballistic missiles "Dagger".
