The transfer of the aircraft carrier Vikrant took place on July 28, 2022 and was recorded by the signing of acceptance documents by the appointed commander of the ship, representatives of the Indian Navy headquarters, as well as the chairman and managing director of the Cochin Shipyard Ltd.

The official transfer took place after extensive acceptance tests conducted between August 2021 and July 2022. According to the test reports, the ship's characteristics, including the hull, main propulsion systems, auxiliary equipment, flight control systems, armament and sensors, as well as maneuverability indicators and system parameters, were assessed as satisfactory.

Designed by the Directorate of Naval Design of the Indian Navy (DND) and built at the Cochin Shipyard Ltd (CSL), the Vikrant was named after its famous predecessor, the first Indian aircraft carrier, which played a decisive role in the 1971 war.

DND has reportedly developed a ship project in several iterations, including using 3D models of virtual reality and modern software. At the same time, CSL upgraded its shipbuilding infrastructure and increased productivity during construction.

The aircraft carrier Vikrant, 262 meters long, has a total displacement of about 45,000 tons, which makes it much larger and more modern than its predecessor. The ship is equipped with four gas turbines with a total capacity of 88 MW and develops a maximum speed of 28 knots.

The contract between the Ministry of Defense and CSL was executed in three stages, which were completed in May 2007, December 2014 and October 2019, respectively. The ship was laid down in February 2009 and launched in August 2013. Built by 76% of domestic manufacturers, Vikrant is called an excellent example of national aspiration in the line of "made in India".

Built with a high level of engine automation and ship navigation, the Vikratn aircraft carrier allows you to place a group of 30 aircraft, including MiG-29K fighters, Ka-31 and MN-60R multipurpose helicopters, as well as domestic advanced light helicopters (Advanced Light Helicopters, ALH) and light combat aircraft (Light Combat Aircraft, LCA) in the version for the Navy. The aircraft carrier Vikrant supports the aircraft engagement procedure known as STOBAR (Short Take-Off but Arrested Landing), for which it is equipped with a springboard for aircraft take-off and a set of safety landing cables.

The ship's equipment includes a large number of domestic equipment and mechanisms, the production of which involved large industrial companies in India, such as BEL, BHEL, GRSE, Keltron, Kirloskar, Larsen & Toubro, Wartsila India and others, as well as more than 100 medium-sized companies. An important by-product of the ship's construction was the national development and production of steel for warships as part of a partnership between the Navy, DRDO and the Steel Authority of India (Steel Authority of India, SAIL). This allowed India to become a self-sufficient state in the production of steel for warships. Today, all warships under construction in Indian shipyards are made of local steel.
