TSAMTO, February 10. Construction for the Brazilian Navy of the Tamandare-class multi-purpose frigate (MEKO A-100) will begin in September.
This became known following the visit of the Deputy Commander of the Brazilian Navy for Operations, Admiral of the Squadron Marcos Sampaio Olsen to the Brasil Sul Shipyard acquired by Germany.
As reported by Infodefensa.com ThyssenKrupp Estaleiro Brasil Sul (tkEBS) will be responsible for the design of frigates ordered by the Brazilian Navy, in accordance with the agreement signed in March 2020.
During the visit, the admiral got acquainted with the progress of equipping and preparing the enterprise for the construction of frigates. In the future, the company will allow Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems to build not only frigates for the Brazilian Navy, but also ships for customers from other South American countries.
As planned, the share of national content in the design of the lead ship will be 30%, and the rest - 40%.
As reported by TSAMTO, in March 2020, the state-owned company Emgepron, acting on behalf of the Brazilian Defense Ministry, and the joint venture Aguas Azuis Construcao Naval, formed by Thyssen Krupp Marine Systems, Embraer Defense & Security and ATECH Negocios em Tecnologias SA, signed a contract for the construction of four Tamandare-class multipurpose frigates (MEKO A-100) for the Brazilian Navy. The cost of the program is estimated at 9.1 billion reais ($2 billion).
The construction of the lead ship is scheduled to begin in 2022. The lead frigate is to be launched in October 2024 and handed over to the Brazilian Navy in September 2025. Deliveries of all four frigates are tentatively scheduled for the period from 2025 to 2028.
