Irkut Corporation has handed over four upgraded Su-30SM2 fighters to the Russian Navy
In 2021, the Irkutsk Aviation Plant (part of the Irkut Corporation) manufactured four modernized Su-30SM2 fighter jets for the needs of naval aviation of the Russian Navy. Alexander Veprev, General Director of the Irkutsk Aviation Plant of Irkut Corporation, reported this to Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu on January 20, TASS reports.
"In 2021, the Irkutsk Aviation Plant for the first time manufactured four upgraded super-maneuverable multifunctional two-seat Su-30SM2 fighter aircraft in the interests of naval aviation," Veprev said during a single day of acceptance of military products, which was held at the National Defense Control Center of Russia.
The General Director of the Irkutsk Aircraft Factory noted that the upgraded aircraft received Russian equipment, which was replaced by foreign-made analogues. In the course of the work, it was possible to improve the characteristics of the electronic countermeasures complex, the sighting and navigation complex and increase the detection range of air targets. The aircraft also received an expanded arsenal of means to combat air and ground targets.
Earlier, the Oryx publication estimated the purchase of Su-30SM fighters by Armenia. The publication suggested that four planes may not be enough to confront the Azerbaijani MiG-29s.
In December, it became known about the training of Su-30SM2 crews in the Baltic Fleet. The new aircraft will be delivered to the 4th Guards Marine Assault Regiment.
