The submarines of Project 636.3, which include the Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky cruiser, will play an important role in the Pacific Fleet of the Russian Federation, whose main task is to cover the deployment areas of nuclear submarines carrying intercontinental missiles. Military expert Dmitry Kornev told Izvestia about this on Tuesday, December 21.

He noted that the number of submarines in the Pacific Ocean has seriously decreased after the collapse of the Soviet Union. That is why the Pacific Fleet is currently being actively reinforced with submarines, including diesel-electric submarines of Project 636.3, which also includes Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the military expert explained.

"In total, the TOPF will receive six units of them, which will play a very important role. Their main task is to cover the deployment areas of nuclear submarines carrying intercontinental missiles. In terms of low noise and their combat capabilities, they are not inferior to modern submarines of other countries. The Kalibr-PL cruise missiles on board make them truly multipurpose," Kornev noted.

The military expert pointed out that submarines with such ammunition can work on both surface and ground targets. Thus, they will be able to support both naval and amphibious or land operations, he concluded.

Earlier that day, the information support department of the Pacific Fleet of the press service of the Eastern Military District reported that the Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky submarine of the Pacific Fleet launched a Kalibr cruise missile, a salvo was fired from an underwater position in the waters of the Sea of Japan.

It was clarified that the crew of the submarine, while performing the training task, conducted a set of trainings with the development of an algorithm of actions during rocket firing with high-precision weapons. Before the launch, the submariners conducted a tactical maneuver of secretly entering the shooting area.

The missile fired from the submarine hit the coastal target position on the tactical field of Surkum at the estimated time. The firing range exceeded 1000 km.

Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky at the Pacific Fleet is one of the first diesel-electric submarines capable of carrying high-precision Kalibr cruise missiles.

By 2024, six multipurpose submarines of Project 636.3 will serve in Vladivostok. These ships will increase the capabilities of the Russian fleet in the region: the boats of the series are considered one of the most silent in the world and carry an impressive arsenal on board, including Kalibr cruise missiles, as well as supersonic Onyx.
