A US Navy ship hit a training target with an LWSD laser installation
The US Central Command announced the testing of laser weapons. The amphibious transport dock of the US Navy USS Portland (LPD 27) hit a training target in the Gulf of Aden as part of a demonstration firing. This is reported by the Defense Blog.
During the shooting, the LWSD (Laser Weapons System Demonstrator) Mark 2 Mod 0 laser weapon system demonstrator hit a surface training target.
The 150 kilowatt laser was developed by specialists from Northrop Grumman and the Office of Naval Research. The development is based on the LAWS laser with a power of 30 kilowatts, which was installed on the ship USS Ponce. The new weapon will allow you to hit drones, small ships, missiles and artillery ammunition.
In 2020, the LWSD system was tested in the Pacific Ocean. The laser successfully hit a small-sized drone.
Earlier, military expert Dmitry Kornev said that the Russian laser complex "Peresvet" is designed to disable satellites. The complex will be able to dazzle reconnaissance aircraft and spacecraft.
In October, Lockheed Martin announced the transfer of the AHEL laser to the US Air Force. After ground tests, the system will be installed on board the C-130J fire support aircraft.
