The Russian Navy may receive 18 small rocket ships of the project 22800 "Karakurt". The capabilities of Russian ships were evaluated in the United States. Karakurt demonstrates the modernization of the Russian Navy, writes The National Interest.
The appearance of the 22800 project ship was presented within the framework of the Army-2015 forum, and in 2018 the customer received the lead ship of the series. The publication notes that the pace of construction of "Karakurts" will determine their prevalence in the Russian Navy.
"The Karakurt vessels are designed to complement, not replace, the upgraded Buyan-M corvettes of the Russian Navy. With a displacement of approximately 850 and 950 tons, respectively, the Karakurt and Buyan classes reflect the modernization strategy of the Russian Navy, increasingly focused on the transition to compact local rapid reaction forces," writes The National Interest.
The publication notes that the new ships can hit surface and ground targets. The advantages of the 22800 project vessels include maneuverability and speed, which reaches 30 knots.
The Karakurt received a universal ship-based shooting complex that can carry eight Onyx or Kalibr missiles. The author emphasizes that in the future ships can become carriers of hypersonic missiles "Zircon".
In September, Russian Deputy Defense Minister Andrei Kartapolov spoke about the arming of the group of troops in Crimea. According to him, the protection of the peninsula is provided by the coastal missile systems "Bal" and "Bastion", patrol ships and small missile ships of the project 22800 "Karakurt".
