The active phase of the Selenga-2021 exercise has ended in Mongolia. During maneuvers involving formations of the Eastern Military District and the Armed Forces of Mongolia, a Mercedes-Benz with an anti-aircraft gun was spotted. Unimog trucks were used by Mongolian servicemen. This is reported by Rossiyskaya Gazeta.
During the exercises at the Doytyn Am high-altitude training ground, Russian units used T-72B3 tanks and BMP-2 infantry fighting vehicles. In turn, the Mongolian military used T-72A tanks and BTR-70M armored personnel carriers. Artillery support for the troops was provided by howitzers and multiple rocket launchers.
To cover the troops from air strikes, the Mongolian military used anti-aircraft guns of the caliber of 23 mm ZU-23-2. The guns were installed on the platforms of Mercedes-Benz Unimog U5000 all-terrain trucks. Earlier, the German government transferred trucks from the Bundeswehr to Mongolia as part of military assistance.
More than 1.5 thousand servicemen took part in the annual Selenga-2021 exercises. The maneuvers took place in difficult climatic conditions. The closing ceremony of the international military exercises was held in the Mongolian city of Zuun Mod.
In September, rOssiyskaya Gazeta drew attention to armored personnel carriers used by Russian paratroopers in exercises. A unit of the Ivanovo Guards Airborne Unit used airborne armored personnel carriers BTR-MDM with anti-aircraft installation ZU-23-2.
