The operation of the Russian segment (RS) of the International Space Station (ISS) is planned to be completed by 2028, TASS reports, referring to the recommendation of the Scientific and Technical Council of Roscosmos.
According to the conclusions of the advisory body of the state corporation, Roscosmos should start developing a draft design of the Russian Orbital Service Station (ROSS). "The ROSS, created using new technologies, should become an evolutionary step in the development of a program for the study and development of the Moon, flights to Mars and the implementation of innovative scientific and technical programs in space," the experts said.
According to the council of chief designers, "due to the aging of a significant part of the station's equipment, the further operation of the ISS RS after 2024 creates additional risks."
In April, the head of the state corporation Dmitry Rogozin said that Russia, after withdrawing from the ISS project, allows the transfer of the Russian segment of the orbital laboratory to NASA. In the same month, he said that the Scientific and Energy Module, originally created for the ISS, would be used as a foundation for the construction of ROSS.
In the same month, Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Borisov said that Russia would withdraw from the ISS project in 2025 and begin creating a new national orbital station. At the same time, the official said that the situation associated with the aging of the ISS structures is becoming catastrophic and Russia cannot put the lives of astronauts at risk.
