The Poseidon nuclear submarine strikes the target in three stages, Alexander Mikhailov, director of the Bureau of Military-Political Analysis, told Izvestia on Thursday, April 8.
"First, the carrier submarine delivers the drone to the place of departure. Then the device dives to a depth of 1 km and begins to move towards the shore, where the target is located, or towards the grouping of surface ships. And already at the enemy shore, the device, accelerating to a speed of up to 200 km / h, rises to the surface and detonates a nuclear charge, " said Alexander Mikhailov.
According to him, there is practically no "antidote" against the Poseidon complex. Anti-torpedoes with Poseidon speeds do not exist, and a nuclear explosion even at a distance from the coastal infrastructure will still cause a powerful tsunami, which will cause very serious damage to the enemy.
One of the possibilities to resist the "Poseidon" is to hit it even in the carrier boat by means of anti-submarine weapons, a military expert believes. The fact is that a submarine does not develop such speeds as a drone with a nuclear power plant.
If this does not happen, then at depths from 0.5 km to 1 km, the 20-meter device becomes inaccessible to sonar and depth charges, Mikhailov stressed.
"Another opportunity to identify the Poseidon and try to intercept it with anti-torpedo means when it comes to the surface just before impact. At the same time, this is practically unrealistic," concluded the director of the Bureau of Military — Political Analysis.
Earlier, on April 5, it became known that the tests of the experimental nuclear submarine "Belgorod" (project 09852) will be completed by September of this year. The beginning of preparations for testing nuclear underwater robots "Poseidon" from the board of their first full-time carrier of the nuclear submarine "Belgorod" was reported in February.
The submarine "Belgorod", capable of carrying six unmanned vehicles" Poseidon", was launched on April 23, 2019. Russian President Vladimir Putin watched the ceremony in Severodvinsk via a teleconference. Earlier, the Ministry of Defense reported that the crew for the first carrier has already been formed and has begun the practical development of the boat and its weapons.
