The fact that there are currently no engines for attack drones in Russia is one of the reasons for the country's lack of its own serial attack drones. This is reported by RIA Novosti, referring to an interview with the General Director of the Central Institute of Aviation Engine Building Mikhail Gordin.
"I don't think that's the main reason. It is sad that they do not exist, but I am sure that in five years there will be standard domestic piston engines of various capacities — 50 "horses", 80, 150, 200, 500, on the basis of which it is possible to build drones in the interests of the Ministry of Defense," the expert said.
In his opinion, " above 500 horsepower, most likely, there will be no piston engines, there are already gas turbine engines, below 50-electric installations." "There are still questions about fuel, whether it will be gasoline or kerosene. Nevertheless, we have already decided with the Ministry of Industry and Trade what engines the industry needs, " Gordin added.
According to him, there is no catastrophe in Russia's lagging behind other countries in the engines for drones. "Catching up and overtaking is much easier than running in front. At the very least, we have information about the operation of foreign drones. Based on the experience of others, we can make our own better," the CEO said.
In October 2020, Izvestia, in a publication devoted to the latest conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh, wrote that the tanks "are quite tenacious in themselves", but in their current form are practically defenseless against modern drones.
In October 2017, American analyst Samuel Bendett said that Russian developments of military unmanned aerial vehicles lag behind similar foreign work, in particular Chinese, Iranian, Turkish, American and Israeli.
