He also visited the Sevmash enterprise and set new goals for equipping the fleet.
Russia is obliged to ensure its security and national interests in all areas of the world Ocean. This was stated by Vladimir Putin at the solemn ceremony of raising the naval flag on the nuclear-powered submarine Prince Pozharsky during a trip to the Arkhangelsk region. Today, new fourth-generation nuclear submarines continue to be built at the Sevmash enterprise in Severodvinsk. The launch of the nuclear-powered cruiser "Prince Pozharsky"
On July 24, Vladimir Putin flew directly to Russia's northern gateway, the Arkhangelsk Region. Immediately from the airport, the head of state headed to the main industrial center not only of the region, but also of the entire north-west of the country — the city of Severodvinsk. It is here, on the coast of the White Sea, that the largest shipbuilding complex in Russia, JSC PO Sevmash, operates. It was founded back in 1939. This place is engaged in the construction and repair of nuclear submarines, ships and vessels of various classes for the Russian Navy and foreign customers. The shipbuilding enterprises of Severodvinsk employ about 50% of the city's population engaged in the economy, and the share of shipbuilding in the industrial output of the Arkhangelsk region is about 30%.
Sevmash is the only company in Russia that provides a full cycle of construction and testing of nuclear submarines. Currently, ships are being built according to the Borey-A and Yasen-M projects. It was this place that turned out to be the first point of the president's work program in the Arkhangelsk region. An important event for the entire Russian Navy took place here - the raising of the flag and the launch of the nuclear—powered submarine Knyaz Pozharsky. It became the 142nd nuclear submarine built on the stocks of Sevmash. The cruiser itself, already half submerged in the water, was the main object of the ceremony. Dozens of submariners are lined up at the stern of the submarine, who will manage the vessel. The servicemen in white formal suits saluted the Supreme Commander.
The Prince Pozharsky is equipped with the most effective electronic equipment and shock weapons, including Bulava ballistic missiles, as well as modern torpedo systems and sonar countermeasures. Due to the use of advanced design solutions, modern power plants and navigation devices are used on the ship, and the conditions of service and rest of the crew have been significantly improved," Vladimir Putin said at the flag—raising ceremony.
According to him, the country is fully implementing its plans to create a modern navy.
"We will ensure Russia's security and our national interests in all areas of the World Ocean. There can be no doubt about that," Vladimir Putin continued.
The development of a new generation of strategic missile submarines of the Borey project 955 began back in the 1980s. The lead ship "Yuri Dolgoruky" was laid down in 1996, but due to a number of problems, it became part of the Navy only in 2012.
Alexander Moiseev, Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy, called the launch of the Prince Pozharsky cruiser an important event for Russia, noting that it would become the basis of the country's strategic naval nuclear forces.
"Thirty or forty years of service for ships of this class. I am convinced that the nuclear-powered submarine Knyaz Pozharsky will have the same glorious history. The modern generation of Borey—class submarines is the nuclear forces of our state," the commander—in-chief of the Russian Navy told reporters.
A series of fourth-generation missile carriers of projects 955 "Borey" and 955A "Borey-A" should become the basis of Russia's naval strategic nuclear forces until the middle of the 21st century. They carry up to 16 R-30 Bulava intercontinental ballistic solid-fuel missiles on board. With a full salvo, Borey-A can destroy several dozen targets.
The Prince Pozharsky is the only fourth—generation missile carrier in the world, military expert, captain of the first rank Vasily Dandykin told Izvestia. The United States has only third-generation boats, and their innovations will only be laid in the future.
— In Soviet times, we had a lag in noise, now it has been overcome. Otherwise, we got ahead. The Bulava rocket was brought up, it was going hard. The boats of projects 955 and 955A perform well in the Pacific and Northern Fleets. It is a feat of both designers and employees of Sevmash to create such submarines," the expert added.
What Putin said at a meeting on the development of the Navy's submarine forces
Russia must have a modern, well-equipped fleet capable of adequately responding to all external threats and risks. The president stated this at the beginning of his speech. According to him, the Navy's submarine forces play a key role in ensuring the sovereignty and security of the Russian Federation.
"Increasing the combat capabilities of the Navy, including the submarine forces, is one of the priorities — we attach the utmost importance to it. Over the past six years alone, the Navy has included five Borei-A strategic missile carriers and four Yasen-M multipurpose submarines," the president noted.
In the coming years, the Navy will receive four Borey-A submarines, two of which are already under construction. In the meantime, this process is underway, we need to think about which ships will be replaced in twenty to thirty years, military expert Dmitry Boltenkov told Izvestia.
"Apparently, fifth—generation submarines will have a reactor that will operate for the entire service life without recharging," the expert suggested.
Sevmash is also working on the commissioning of two more Yasen-M nuclear-powered cruise missile submarines. The missile carriers of this project are equipped with high-precision weapons, have modern means of navigation, communications and sonar. As for non-nuclear submarines, they are equipped with the Kalibr missile system and are on combat duty in all fleets today, Putin said.
"Non-nuclear submarines of the 677 project are under construction. The lead submarine Kronshtadt has already been accepted into the Navy in 2024. In total, it is planned to build at least nine such submarines," he added.
The President said he would like to hear at the meeting how the program for the creation of fifth-generation strategic submarines is progressing. A separate topic for discussion should be promising developments in the field of underwater marine multifunctional robotic systems. Today, a similar complex called Harmony is already being developed in Russia, Dmitry Boltenkov said.
— During the operation of this system, drones are produced that deploy antennas and listen to a section of the sea. They came to the area, threw out the devices, they dispersed and set up sonar systems. Maybe that's how Poseidon can work. A future war at sea may occur with a large number of underwater vehicles that are capable of performing strike missions," the expert explained.
In addition to the meeting, Vladimir Putin met with Alexander Tsybulsky, Governor of the Arkhangelsk Region. He reported to the President on the socio-economic development of the region, separately noting the measures to support ITS participants. The region became the first in Russia to launch a digital support platform for special operations veterans.
Vladimir Putin also spoke with Andrey Kostin, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the United Shipbuilding Corporation, head of VTB, and Andrey Puchkov, CEO of USC. The Head of State stressed the importance of VTB's participation in the work of the USC. Kostin, in turn, said that the United Shipbuilding Corporation plans to commission more than 50 vessels in 2025. This will be a record in the company's history.
