Iran is preparing to begin sea trials of the new carrier of the IRIS Kurdestan (442) drones. Like its predecessor, the "drone carrier" IRIS Makran (441), Kurdestan is a converted tanker. In this case, it is Tabukan (IMO: 8917467), which was previously engaged in the transportation of crude oil.
The vessel underwent a major overhaul to support expeditionary naval operations. The conversion is the responsibility of Iran Shipbuilding Offshore Industries Complex Co. (ISOICO), whose facilities are located near Bandar Abbas.
The vessel, built in 1992, is about 183 m long and 32.23 m wide. Its capacity is 29,506 tons, and its deadweight is 45,425 tons. Before Iran acquired it, it flew the flag of Togo. The technical characteristics allow the vessel to become a large floating base with enough space to accommodate combat systems and equipment. The wide stern provides excellent stability, which is an important factor for UAV operation in marine conditions.

The tanker's upper deck has been converted into a large flight deck suitable for helicopters and drones. Containers with various equipment can also be located on it, acting, for example, as communication and control points.
It is assumed that the internal reconstruction of the vessel made it possible to accommodate workshops for maintenance, staff quarters, fuel and ammunition storage facilities, as well as drone controls.
Kurdestan will serve not only as a "drone carrier", but also act as a mobile MTO and support center, extending the range of the Iranian Navy in remote maritime zones without the need for resupply from shore.
