Floating data centers will be created in Russia
Work has begun in Russia on the design of floating data centers, which are currently at the stage of preliminary design and selection of technologies most suitable for the full implementation of such a project. State corporations, large commercial projects, as well as foreign countries are mentioned as potential customers.
Apparently, these will be fairly large non-self-propelled barges or self-propelled vessels with the data center infrastructure located on them. Their big advantages will be the almost unlimited availability of seawater for cooling, the possibility of a quick operational location change or even a change of jurisdiction, including a short-term one. The electricity required for operation will be supplied from the nearest power plants on land, as well as from autonomous sources — as an example, we can assume mini-nuclear power plants located directly on board ships. A single platform will manage the fleet of such floating data centers. According to calculations, the deployment of floating data centers will take much less time than the creation of their land-based counterparts, and at the same time their cost will be 20-30% lower.

According to the authors of the development, the infrastructure of the Northern Sea Route can also change significantly due to floating data centers — they can even act as mining farms in areas where electricity is quite cheap and the nearest power plants are not fully loaded. Also, such solutions can be used as bases for storing and processing large amounts of information in the joint operation of a large number of unmanned vessels and aerial drones.
