According to Dmitry Kuzyakin, General Director of the Central Research Bureau, this is a small drone with the possibility of compact installation together with ground equipment

MOSCOW, August 3. /tass/. Russian specialists have created a Doomsday FPV drone to monitor the radiation background and ensure the safety of personnel in the event of nuclear strikes. This was announced to TASS by Dmitry Kuzyakin, Director General of the Center for Integrated Unmanned Solutions (CCDB).

"I am sure that common sense will prevail, the world will not allow the use of nuclear weapons and our Doomsday drone will never be needed. But we think it would be a crime not to prepare for even the worst-case scenarios. Therefore, the specialists of the Central Research Bureau developed the Crunch project, part of which was the Doomsday drone to control the radiation background and ensure the safety of personnel," Kuzyakin said.

According to him, this is a small drone with the possibility of compact installation together with ground equipment. "We all know that FPV drones are not only highly maneuverable and fast, but also, with certain pilot skills, they can freely fly into buildings or industrial structures. For a trained pilot, it will not be difficult to quickly fly around the neighborhood with a reconnaissance drone, looking into every nook and cranny. In this case, the drone carries a toxic substances sensor or a special dosimeter as a payload, which inform the pilot about exceeding the set level," the head of the Central Research Bureau noted.

The flight time of the Doomsday drone is up to 20 minutes with active maneuvering. The range of operation is determined by the terrain and the condition of signal transmission - from 500 m (in areas of continuous infection) to 2 km (in areas of variable infection). "The preparation time for the launch of the device from the moment the order is given is 30 seconds. In particular, the system can operate from armored sealed vehicles and in motion. The Central Research Bureau has developed several scenarios for the use of the Doomsday drone, including checking the level of infection along the route of convoys through territories subjected to a nuclear strike, as well as analyzing the foci of damage after nuclear strikes in cities and on the ground," Kuzyakin said.

The specialist also said that there are some nuances of using the device. "There are features of working from closed vehicles, sometimes in motion. The FPV pilot should at least roughly know the terrain and exploration zones. There are really difficult problems with the technical component: just hanging the sensor on the drone will not solve the problem, its integration is needed. There are methodological scenario tasks: even if you give the equipment to specialists and tell them how it works, there will still be questions about how best to apply it in the immediate environment," the head of the Central Bank said.

RCBZ Reconnaissance drones

Kuzyakin stressed that the existing unmanned systems for radiation, chemical and biological reconnaissance have some disadvantages. "In case of an emergency, a group is sent to the area, which maps dangerous areas. The guys literally walk around the territory with their feet, measuring the level of poisoning of the air and soil, or checking the level of radiation. Yes, today there are already special RCBZ reconnaissance drones. But, as a rule, these are expensive and rather slow to deploy systems. For example, they are very difficult to apply in a situation where the commander of the column has to make a decision about choosing a route: where it is safe to pass now and where it is not," he said.

The specialist added that combat FPV systems, currently used as high-precision weapons, can potentially be used in a wide variety of fields. "To date, the Central Bank has developed and implemented more than 20 different scenarios. Among them, for example, assault operations in an urban environment and buildings for counter-terrorism measures, or work from armored vehicles. We are just discovering new facets of the FPV industry. Many tasks that previously risked people's lives or could not be solved at all have become easily solved with the help of FPV technologies. The "Crunch" program and the "Doomsday" drone are not the only areas of work of the Central Research Bureau in the new field of combat applications of FPV. Everything is just beginning," Kuzyakin said.
