The Ministry of Defense has launched a program to restore the network of military and dual-use airfields, primarily affecting the territories of two new military districts and the Northern Fleet. This is reported by sources in the military department.
The military has begun to restore the airfield network in the western part of the country, taking into account the appearance of two air armies in the Moscow and Leningrad military districts. Moreover, it is planned not only to modernize existing airfields, but also to restore those that have already been closed, as well as those where military equipment was not previously based. For example, since the beginning of the year, work has been underway at the Severomorsk-2 airfield in the Murmansk Region, which was closed 26 years ago.
As stated by the ex-commander of the 4th Army of the Air Force and Air Defense, Lieutenant General Valery Gorbenko, the creation of two new districts requires a place to base combat and not only aviation. Therefore, attention is drawn to the already abandoned airfields that existed under the Soviet Union.

Earlier, the Ministry of Defense implemented a program to modernize Arctic airfields, making them all-weather and capable of receiving aircraft of all types. The airfield at the Khmeimim airbase in Syria was modernized, which made it possible to transfer strategic aviation there if necessary.
