TSAMTO, December 5th. The Spanish company Navantia announced the signing ceremony of documents on the transfer of the S-80 – S-81 Isaac Peral class to the country's Navy on November 30 at the Naval Naval Base in Cartagena.
The documents were signed by representatives of Navantia and the Directorate General of Armaments and Materiel (DGAM) of the Spanish Ministry of Defense.
The event was attended by Defense Minister Margarita Robles and other officials. The NPA was transferred to the Spanish Navy's submarine flotilla stationed in Cartagena.
The Isaac Peral is the first of four S–80 class submarines that have been ordered for the Spanish Navy. Navantia's development of the S-80 class submarine has allowed Spain to remain one of the few countries that have the ability to independently design and build submarines.
The S-80 class submarine, one of the most advanced non-nuclear submarines of NATO, is designed to perform a wide range of tasks, including combating enemy surface ships and submarines, conducting reconnaissance, etc. It is possible to equip submarines in the future with weapons for striking ground targets.
At the moment, the second NPL of the series, S-82 Narciso Monturiol, is at the stage of connecting sections, and S-83 Cosme Garcia and S-84 Mateo Garcia de los Reyes are at an advanced stage of construction. Navantia also expects to receive export contracts.
The third and fourth NAPS of the series will be equipped with the BEST air-independent power plant (Bio-Ethanol Stealth Technologies), based on the technology of producing hydrogen on board by reforming bioethanol. The VNEU allows you to provide the ship with electricity at any depth and stay underwater for weeks. The first two submarines will be equipped with the BEST VNEU during the first major overhaul.
As reported by CAMTO, the contract for the construction of four VNEU-equipped submarines for the Spanish Navy was signed in March 2004. The ceremony of laying the keel of the S-80, S-81 class head NAFL took place in December 2007. It was originally planned that this submarine would be transferred to the Spanish Navy in 2012, but the program encountered serious technical difficulties. At first, the delivery dates were postponed to 2015, but when it became clear that additional funds and complex work would be required to correct the situation, the deadlines shifted first to 2021, then to 2022, and eventually to 2023.
After completion of the project, the length of the S-80 class submarine is 80.81 m, width – 11.68 m, diameter of the durable hull – 7.3 m, underwater displacement – 2695 tons.
Submarines can be operated by a reduced crew of up to 32 people without reducing capabilities. 8 MTR fighters can also be accommodated on board. The estimated speed in the underwater position is 19 knots, the diving depth is 460 m, and the autonomy is up to 50 days. The NAF is equipped with an integrated combat control system and a platform control system developed by Navantia Sistemas. The core of the combat system was developed in collaboration with the American Lockheed Martin, which also supplies the GAS kit. The submarine is armed with six 533 mm torpedo tubes and a weapon system that provides the ability to launch torpedoes, anti-ship missiles and tactical missiles to hit ground targets.
