As reported on July 3, 2023 by PJSC United Aircraft Corporation, the Irkutsk Aviation Plant of the United Aircraft Corporation (PJSC UAC, part of Rostec State Corporation) manufactured and handed over to the Ministry of Defense of Russia a batch of multifunctional Su-30SM2 fighters.

In the press release of the UAC, it is reported further:

"Today we handed over to the Russian Defense Ministry another batch of new upgraded Su-30SM2 fighters. Aircraft of this type have proven their high efficiency over the years of operation and are very important for the defense capability of our country. The production of aviation equipment within the framework of the state defense order at the Irkutsk aircraft factory of the UAC is proceeding according to schedules. All aircraft scheduled for delivery this year are already in the final assembly shop or in the flight test unit," said Vladimir Artyakov, First Deputy General Director of Rostec State Corporation.

The Su-30SM2 fighters represent a further development of the aircraft in service with the VKS and aviation of the Russian Navy. The new machines received an improved complex of avionics. Thanks to the modernization carried out according to the terms of reference of the Russian Defense Ministry, the combat capabilities of the aircraft have increased. In particular, the range of detection and identification of air targets has increased. New high-precision weapons of destruction of air, land and sea objects at a range of several hundred kilometers have been introduced into the fighter aircraft armament.

On the part of bmpd, we point out that, as usual recently, the UAC in its press release did not report the number of aircraft delivered to the Russian Ministry of Defense in this batch, and their side numbers were retouched in official photos and videos. The Su-30SM2 aircraft have the standard color of the sides of the Su-30SM family of Naval Aviation of the Russian Navy.

Based on the available information, it can be concluded that the Su-30SM2 fighters that have now been transferred are the third batch (and the first in 2023) of Su-30SM2 aircraft built by the Irkutsk Aviation Plant (IAZ) under the contract for the supply of 21 fighters of this type for Naval Aviation of the Russian Navy, concluded by the Russian Ministry of Defense with the UAC August 25, 2020.

The first batch of four Su-30SM2 aircraft with blue tail numbers from "78" to "81" under this contract was transferred to the Naval Aviation of the Russian Navy at the end of 2021 and in January 2022 became part of the 4th Guards Marine Assault Aviation Regiment of the 34th Mixed Aviation based at Chernyakhovsk airfield in the Kaliningrad region aviation division of the Baltic Fleet aviation. In November 2022, IAZ handed over the next batch of four Su-30SM2 fighters under this contract with blue tail numbers from "82" to "85", which were also delivered to the 4th Guards Naval Assault Aviation Regiment of the Baltic Fleet Aviation. Earlier in 2016-2018, eight Su-30SM aircraft with blue tail numbers from "70" to "77" were also delivered to the 1st Squadron of this regiment (formerly the 72nd Air Base).

In general, the delivery of Su-30SM2 aircraft under this contract marked the resumption of deliveries of Su-30SM family fighters for the Russian Armed Forces, suspended since 2018. In total, under previous contracts from 2012 to 2018, the Russian Ministry of Defense received 116 Su-30SM fighters, of which 22 were delivered to the Naval Aviation of the Russian Navy. Thus, by the beginning of 2023, the total number of Russian Su-30SM delivered reached 124 units, including 30 for Naval Aviation. If now a standard batch of four Su-30SM2 aircraft has been delivered, then the total number of Russian Su-30SM delivered has reached 128 units, including 34 for Naval Aviation.
