Military expert Dandykin: The United States is worried about the construction of the nuclear icebreaker fleet of the Russian Federation
On June 1, military expert Captain of the 1st rank of the reserve Vasily Dandykin commented to Izvestia on the information of The New York Times newspaper that climate change accelerates and intensifies competition in the Arctic between Russia, China and the West, while the United States fears that Moscow will inflict a "red right hook" on Washington in this region.
"The ice is melting slowly. Therefore, Russia continues to build a nuclear icebreaker fleet. They are much more concerned about the construction of this fleet and year—round navigation along the Northern Sea Route (USA - Ed.). Of course, they did not say this, but they are talking about warming. And the Northern Fleet is developing. But the Americans are not asleep either, they are increasing their forces in Alaska, both air and land. They are slowly building their icebreaking fleet. This is another application to show that we are strengthening in the Arctic," the expert said.
Dandykin added that the Northern Fleet passed through the straits between Greenland, Iceland and Great Britain in Soviet times, through all the lines of anti-submarine defense.
"That's why it exists, to deal not only with the Arctic, but also with the Atlantic, if the situation requires," he concluded.
On May 31, Stephen Erlanger, a columnist for The New York Times, wrote that the modernized Russian Northern Fleet could pass through the straits between Greenland, Iceland and the United Kingdom (this path is designated in NATO as the "red right hook") to cut sea lanes and submarine cables. This will create a serious threat to the East Coast of the United States, the journalist noted.
Earlier in May, the Ambassador-at-Large of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Chairman of the Committee of Senior Officials of the Arctic Council Nikolai Korchunov noted that the conflict in the Arctic region is increasing and this causes regret on the Russian side.
Korchunov also pointed out that the build-up of NATO's military potential in the Arctic could lead to an escalation in the region. He also noted the strengthening of the West's course towards confrontation and confrontation.
