The hull workshop of the country's largest defense company BAE Systems has been granted permission to build the first Type 26 frigate of the British Navy in Govan County, located in the south-west of the city of Glasgow in Scotland. Work in this direction is expected to begin in 2024.
The plans of the contractor company include the production of 8 such frigates. The assembly of the first 3 of them will be carried out in the open air. Moreover, the site of the new dry dock will become a place to build ships, thereby increasing the capacity of the shipyard to accept more orders in the future.
Nevertheless, BAE Systems recognized that it is impossible to implement a system of increased stealth in ships with full contours, the length of which exceeds 75 meters.
Nevertheless, after lengthy consultations in the defense company, it was decided that the hull workshop would occupy part of the existing tidal basin of the shipyard in order to build at least two ships at the same time.
The delays with the start of the work, it follows from the BAE message, are primarily related to the dimensions of the ships. In addition, the issue of the podvolok has not yet been resolved, on which the design of not only the structure itself, but also the increase in its displacement will directly depend. All these factors will affect the service life of the frigate.
In conclusion, it should be noted that the dimensions of the hull shop will be approximately 81 meters wide, 170 meters long and 49 meters high to the watershed line of the vessel, which will really require a significant increase in the capacity of the shipyard.
