Last week, the Republic of Korea announced a large-scale modernization of its Navy, involving the replacement of one of the three Maritime command fleets of unmanned ships. The upgrade is also understood and reform of the marine Corps of the Republic of Korea on the American model. He would be independent from the Navy structure.
The Navy of the Republic will replenish the fleet of surface ships, fleets of submarines, as well as fleets of aircraft. While unmanned component is given special attention.
In the Navy command noted that this transition will be gradual. It is planned that the share of unmanned vehicles will first be about 1% of the total resources of the Navy, with a gradual increase to 9% and then to 28% by the mid 20-ies and by 2030, respectively.
It is expected that by 2040 the share of unmanned vehicles in the Navy of South Korea will amount to approximately 45% of the total fleet.
In conclusion, we note that the proposal for reform of the Navy came from the President of the Republic of Korea Yun Suk Yale. Work in this direction was entrusted to the marine Corps of the Republic, who will coordinate their actions together with the Ministry of national defence of the country.
Earlier, in the summer of 2022, in South Korea had tested an unmanned anti-submarine underwater vehicle. These tests were deemed successful.
