/tass/. The upgraded Ka-52M helicopter received an improved onboard defense system from all modern man-portable air defense systems (MANPADS) and a new ballistic protection. This was told to TASS by a source in the military-industrial complex.
"The Ka-52M helicopter has received an improved on-board defense system that will protect it from the entire existing range of MANPADS," the agency interlocutor said.
He also said that new developments in the field of materials science have made it possible to increase the security of the machine without its radical weighting. "The latest materials have made it possible to increase the performance in the field of ballistic protection without radically increasing the mass of the machine. Now it is possible to protect things that could not be protected before," the source told TASS, adding that the proportion of anti-corrosion materials has also been increased in the design of the Ka-52M fuselage.
TASS has no official confirmation of this information.
On September 2, a TASS source reported that the updated Ka-52M helicopter was tested during a military special operation in Ukraine. It was noted that "the helicopter proved to work very well, and following the results of the application, representatives of the military department gave the industry recommendations for the refinement and improvement of some systems."
Earlier, the agency's source also reported that state tests of the upgraded machine are scheduled to be completed in October 2022.
The Ka-52M is an upgraded version of the Ka-52 Alligator helicopter, taking into account the experience of its combat use. According to the developers, the Ka-52M missile armament is unified with the armament of another newest Mi-28NM attack helicopter, which significantly increased the range of hitting targets. The Ka-52M also received a new radar system with an active phased array antenna and a guided missile with an extended range. The first flight of the prototype of the upgraded helicopter took place on August 10, 2020.
The design of the Ka-52M uses the best technical solutions: a gyrostabilized optoelectronic system with an increased range of detection and recognition of targets, a new digital drive that will improve the accuracy of aiming when firing from a cannon, new brake wheels with a disc brake system and aircraft tires of increased wear resistance are installed. The VK-2500 engine is installed on the upgraded machines.
According to a TASS source, the Ka-52M will also have network-centric capabilities - to work together with unmanned aerial vehicles and interact with other helicopters and airplanes.
