The US Navy's Arleigh Burke-class destroyer Preble has received a High-Energy Laser weapon with Integrated Optical Dazzler and Surveillance system (HELIOS) designed to monitor and blind the enemy. This is with reference to the Lockheed Martin Corporation, The Drive edition reports .
The publication notes that a 60-kilowatt laser was installed on board the ship a few weeks ago. The publication notes that the laser installation is located on a platform originally intended for the Vulcan 20-millimeter cannon of the Mark 15 Phalanx CIWS naval anti-aircraft artillery complex.
According to The Drive, the laser system is capable of hitting small drones and boats, as well as blinding optical systems on enemy aircraft and ships. The publication writes that Lockheed Martin has already agreed with the US Navy to install another HELIOS on a second Arleigh Burke-type ship.
It is noted that the corporation is working on a 150-kilowatt laser.
In June, Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Borisov said that Russia is three to five years ahead of the world's leading powers in creating solid-state nitride combat lasers.
