BAE Systems will release an additional batch of upgraded self-propelled howitzers M109A7 Paladin ("Paladin") by order of the U.S. Army. M109A7 is the latest version of the 155-mm self-propelled artillery (ACS) M109, according to the UK Defense Journal.
40 self-propelled howitzers and M992A3 ammunition transporters will be produced under a contract worth $299 million. It is noted that the M109A7 is the main means of fire support for combat groups of armored brigades.
The M109A7 self-propelled howitzer is an upgraded version of the M109A6 self-propelled howitzer. The machine received a digital fire control system and an upgraded semi-automatic loading system. The M109A7 differs from previous models with an improved chassis with an engine and transmission from the M2 Bradley Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV).
Earlier in the publication of the American edition of 19FortyFive, it was noted that the Russian 2C35 "Coalition-SV" artillery complex surpasses most Western artillery systems in firing range.
In September 2020, Breaking Defense reported that during a demonstration of an improved combat control system, the M109 howitzer shot down a BQM-167 Skeeter aerial target that simulated a cruise missile.
