MOSCOW, July 22 — RIA Novosti. Russian tank support combat vehicles (BMPT) "Terminator" showed high combat stability in a special operation in Ukraine due to a multi-channel complex of weapons and enhanced protection, an informed source told RIA Novosti.
He clarified that "the advantages of the BMPT consist in high security, which exceeds the security of the main tanks in service with Russia, as well as in a multi-channel complex of weapons that allows you to simultaneously fire at four to five targets."
In addition, the source said, the experience of fighting confirmed that the review of the BMPT is much better than that of most tanks, and this increases the situational awareness of the crew. Also, the BMPT has a higher weapon guidance speed.
"All this increases the effectiveness of tank units, especially when operating in the city, where enemy infantry with anti-tank weapons can fire from unexpected angles, including from above. The BMPT manages to respond to these threats and suppress them, including through the fire of 30-millimeter cannons that reach the enemy through the walls of houses," the interlocutor concluded.
Another informed source told RIA Novosti in May that the Russian army had started using "Terminators" in Ukraine.
According to him, "Terminators" together with tank platoons participate in the fire defeat of Ukrainian positions, armored vehicles, calculations of anti-tank missile systems.
These machines were adopted in Russia in 2018. The BMPT weapons complex consists of two 30-millimeter 2A42 cannons, four 9M120-1 guided missile launchers of the Ataka type with a laser guidance system, two AGS-17 grenade launchers and a 7.62-millimeter upgraded Kalashnikov tank machine gun.
The first contract for the supply of Terminators to the Russian army was signed at the Army-2017 forum. As noted in February last year, the chief designer of the UKBTM machine development company (part of the Uralvagonzavod concern) Andrey Terlikov, during 2021, the Ministry of Defense had to decide on the decision on serial purchases of BMPT. Officially, such decisions have not been mentioned until today.
The exact number of BMPT available in the Russian army is unknown. In November 2021, it was reported that nine such vehicles would be included in the staff of one of the tank regiments of the Central Military District by December 1. According to open sources, a total of ten of these BMPT were handed over to the Russian army.
