Algeria for the first time publicly showed combat vehicles purchased in Russia to support the BMPT-2 Terminator tanks. The cars passed in the parade column during the military parade dedicated to the 60th anniversary of the country's independence, which took place on July 5.
According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute SIPRI, the Algerian army is armed with 120 BMPT-2 purchased in Russia. The delivery of Terminators to Algeria was completed in 2020. The contract for the supply of armored vehicles was concluded in 2017.
Tests of the Terminator BMPT, designed to strengthen the power of the Algerian armored forces, began in this North African country back in 2013. Allegedly, the contract for its acquisition was concluded only in 2016, as Algeria expected the appearance of a more advanced modification – the Terminator-2 with a reduced weight and a reduced crew (3 people instead of 4). The Algerian version of the chassis is maximally unified with the T-90SA tank, which is also in service with local troops.
Earlier it was reported about a possible contract for 300 BMPT, how many were actually ordered, it is not reported. The main purpose is to accompany and provide protection for T-90SA tanks of armored divisions. Prior to that, they were covered by ZSU "Shilka" (from air attacks) and Land Rover cross-country vehicles armed with anti-tank missile systems "Kornet-E" (for hitting ground targets).
It should be noted that in Russia itself, until 2017, the fate of the Terminator BMPT was uncertain, but the tests conducted in Syria made it possible to make a decision on the production of a batch of these combat vehicles for trial operation.
