A video has appeared on YouTube of the crash of a V-22 Osprey tiltrotor on the deck of a Green Bay-type San Antonio amphibious transport dock. The "heartbreaking" video drew the attention of the publication The Drive.
The incident with American military equipment occurred in August 2017 near the coast of Queensland (Australia). The video of the incident, as a result of which three people were killed and 23 were injured, was published for the first time.
In the video, the tiltrotor, trying to board the ship, suddenly tilts, touching the deck with the left gondola. The publication notes that "when the rotor blades hit the deck or any other object, they turn into large fragments of high-speed shrapnel that can cut a person or an aircraft in two."
The report of the US Marine Corps (USMC) notes that during landing, the tiltrotor could not connect to the ship's air navigation system, as a result of which the crew of the aircraft received instructions from air traffic controllers. The main cause of the incident is considered to be a large mass of cargo carried by the tiltrotor.
In September 2018, RIA Novosti, citing a source in the defense industry, reported that the Airborne troops of Russia are preparing a technical task for the creation of an amphibious tiltrotor (a hybrid of an airplane and a helicopter).
