On the second serial icebreaker of the project 22220 "Ural", built at the Baltic plant in St. Petersburg, the reactor plant was launched. This is reported by the USC press service.
As reported, on May 17 at 16:00 on the icebreaker "Ural", the left-side reactor plant was launched, the reactor was brought to a minimally controlled power level and the launch equipment was calibrated. Upon completion of work on the left reactor, testing of the entire nuclear power plant will begin.
- said the chief builder of the nuclear icebreaker "Ural" Valentin Danilin.
The universal nuclear icebreaker Ural is the second serial and third icebreaker of Project 22220, which is being built to provide year-round navigation along the Northern Sea Route. It was laid down at the Baltic Plant in St. Petersburg on July 25, 2016 after the main "Arctic" and the first serial "Siberia", launched on May 25, 2019.
The icebreakers' main power plant includes two Ritm-200 reactors with a thermal capacity of 175 MW each. Its main advantage over other similar installations is its compactness and economy, as well as an energy-efficient integrated layout. The design of the reactors makes it possible to work reliably with the onboard pitching of a nuclear-powered vessel with an oscillation amplitude of 45 degrees and a pitching pitching of 15 degrees. The service life of the reactors is 40 years.
A feature of the project 22220 icebreakers is the use of variable draft using ballast tanks. Two-landing ships can operate both in deep water and in shallow water in riverbeds, overcoming ice up to 3 meters thick.
