MOSCOW, Feb 17 - RIA Novosti. An air defense exercise involving ships of the Northern Fleet took place in the Barents Sea, the Ministry of Defense said in a statement.
According to the scenario of the exercises, the ship's strike group consisting of the heavy nuclear missile cruiser "Peter the Great" and the frigate "Admiral of the Fleet of the Soviet Union Gorshkov" was attacked by cruise missiles and aircraft of a conditional enemy during the passage by sea. The crews of the ships conducted a joint exercise using radio-technical weapons to capture, escort and conditional destruction of low-flying air targets. The role of air targets was assigned to the aircraft of the Army Air Force and Air Defense of the Northern Fleet.
The ministry clarifies that live artillery and anti-aircraft missile firing at air targets will be carried out at the next stages of the exercise. Currently, up to 20 ships and support vessels of the Northern Fleet and more than 10 aircraft of the naval aviation of the Northern Fleet are involved in the exercise. As part of the heterogeneous forces of the Northern Fleet in the Barents Sea, there are the heavy nuclear missile cruiser "Peter the Great", the frigate "Admiral of the Fleet of the Soviet Union Gorshkov", other warships, nuclear and diesel-electric submarines.
