The Russian army adheres to the Soviet doctrine, according to which the decisive force on the battlefield is not tanks with infantry, but artillery. All other types of troops are needed only to provide the "god of war" (the name of Russian artillery since World War II) with advantageous positions for delivering crushing blows. And then use the gaps punched by the guns in the enemy's defense.
The Russians brought the tactics of Soviet artillery to the level of high art, writes Forbes . Their guns are mobile, batteries have many drones for reconnaissance purposes and fire correction. Ground-based radars and other electronic systems are used not only to detect armored vehicles, but are even capable of detecting and blocking mobile phone signals in enemy positions.
Each battalion tactical group of the Russian army has its own artillery. There are other units - at the level of a brigade, division and army - but it is the BTG artillery that is closest to the front line and therefore the most dangerous. Its advantage lies in the speed with which it is able to respond to changes in the situation. Artillery from the BTG is able to act almost instantly, as soon as favorable conditions arise.
Each BTG has 18 self-propelled howitzers. In the US Army, such guns are located in the brigade level, which ensures the centralization of control and combat power. But the commander of the Russian battalion does not need to request fire support in the brigade - he has everything he needs. And exactly where it is necessary - behind the battle lines of tanks and infantry fighting vehicles.
And thanks to intensive and continuous modernization, BTG can quickly receive data on targets from drones.
