TSAMTO, February 11. According to information published on February 8 on the official Twitter page of Goa Shipyard Ltd, a patrol ship of the coastal zone of the Sankalp class of the third batch (Batch III) was transferred to the command of the Indian Coast Guard ahead of schedule.
Saksham is the fifth of five ships of this type, the contract for the construction of which was concluded in August 2016. The laying of the keel of the vessel took place in June 2019, launching – in December 2020. The ship was delivered after completion of acceptance tests.
As reported by TSAMTO, the contract for the supply of five new patrol ships was signed by the Ministry of Defense of India with Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) on August 26, 2016. The cost of the order was 20 billion. rupees ($300 million). Steel cutting for the lead ship of the series, (18) "Sachet" (Sachet), began on November 13, 2016. The ship joined the Indian Coast Guard in May 2020. The second ship of the series was accepted by the Indian Coast Guard in December 2020, the third in May 2021, and the fourth in October 2021.
The ships were built according to a project developed by Goa Shipyard Limited, and are designed to patrol territorial waters and the exclusive economic zone, conduct search and rescue operations, combat piracy, extinguish fires at sea, and train personnel.
Earlier, in January 2012, the Indian Coast Guard Command signed an 18 billion contract with Goa Shipyard Limited. rupees ($273 million), which provided for the supply of six 105-meter patrol ships with a displacement of about 2,400 tons (the second batch). Steel cutting for the lead vessel of the Samarth series began on May 14, 2012. The ships were delivered to the customer from November 2015 to December 2017. These ships were built on the basis of the Sankalp vessel project. Two ships of this type were built in 2007-2008 . (first batch). The contract signed in 2016 is also called the "Sankalp" Batch-III project.
The length of the Sankalp-class Batch-III ships is 105 m, width - 13.6 m, draft - 3.65 m, displacement - 2457 tons. The ship is equipped with two MTU 20V 8000 M71L diesel engines with a capacity of 24406 hp (18.2 MW) and develops a maximum speed of 24 knots, a cruising range of 6,500 nautical miles at a speed of 13.8 knots, autonomy - 20 days, crew - 133 people. The contours of the ship's hull provide a reduction in fuel consumption. Two high-speed boats with a rigid hull and a 6.8-ton twin-engine helicopter can be accommodated on board. The ships are armed with one 40/60 mm Bofors artillery mount and two DUMV with 12.7 mm machine guns.
