The upcoming exercises of the Russian Navy have caused concern among the Irish authorities: Western experts believe that in fact the events are a kind of message for the UK and the NATO leadership.
This is the conclusion reached by 19fortyfive columnist Michael Peck. He mentions that the Irish Aviation Authority was notified about the planned Russian exercises in international waters 240 kilometers from the southwest coast of the country in February. The activities will include live shooting exercises. According to international law, the actions of the Russian military are legitimate: the fleet does not intend to cross the territorial waters of Ireland.
The defense complex of Ireland is very modest. Therefore, the upcoming exercises are actually a signal for the UK, which is actively involved in the development of the Ukrainian crisis, Michael Peck is sure. He writes that Russia is capable of operating in the rear of NATO in the North Atlantic: submarines with cruise missiles can hit not only sea, but also land targets.
