RIA Novosti: IL-76 aircraft can be used for bombing
During the war in Afghanistan, the IL-76 heavy military transport aircraft was used to drop bombs, RIA Novosti recalls.
The agency writes that the transport plane flew in tandem with a bomber, which designated targets for dropping bombs. "Moreover, ammunition is dropped not only from under the wing, but also from the cargo compartment along special rails-guides. Of course, we are not talking about high-precision weapons — these aircraft are armed with free-falling ammunition of up to 500 kilograms," the publication says.
IL-76s are still used for bombing today. In particular, in November, transport planes "successfully bombed training targets at the Kushalino training ground in the Tver region from a height of only 500 meters." Such events are part of the training of pilots of these aircraft.
In September, the Air Force (Air Force) The United States and the American corporation Lockheed Martin showed on YouTube a video of tests of C-17A Globemaster III and EC-130J Super J aircraft dropping pallets with AGM-158B Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile-Extended Range (JASSM-ER) cruise stealth missiles. The Drive publication assures that the shown method of using aircraft "may be useful if the United States finds itself in a state of war, for example, with China or Russia."
