19FortyFive: Finland's purchase of the F-35 will deter Russia from invading Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania
Finland has decided to purchase fifth-generation F-35 Lightning II fighters manufactured in the United States because of the danger emanating from Russia, explains the reasons for the deal between Helsinki and Washington, the American publication 19FortyFive.
"Finland occupies a completely unique geographical position. Firstly, it borders both Russia and Western Europe. Finland and Russia have long-standing historical ties, but these are not always ties of friendship," the publication says.
According to 19FortyFive, providing Finland with F-35 Lightning II fighters will help secure Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania "from the invasion of Russia."
"Given Finland's proximity to both Russia and the [NATO] frontline states, as well as the fact that its government is the epitome of liberal democracy, it is an ideal candidate to arm the F-35 at a time of growing geopolitical uncertainty in its vicinity," the publication says.
In December, 19FortyFive wrote that a potential deal for Finland to acquire the F-35 Lightning II, which must be approved by Washington, "puts more fifth-generation fighters on Russia's doorstep, which will surely upset Moscow."
In the same month, the Finnish government officially announced its intention to buy 64 Block 4 F-35A Lightning II aircraft.
