MOSCOW, Nov 16 - RIA Novosti. The new Russian universal nuclear icebreaker Siberia went on sea trials in St. Petersburg on Tuesday, the press service of the Baltic Plant reported.
In the next three weeks, the delivery team of the Baltic Plant, together with representatives of counterparty organizations, will check the operation of the icebreaker's mechanisms and equipment, the press release notes.
"Specialists are planning to conduct a complex of tests, including the operation of a steam turbine installation, electric propulsion systems of the vessel, the operation of shaft lines and deck mechanisms (anchor and steering devices). The speed and maneuverability characteristics of the icebreaker, the functioning of ship-wide systems and automation systems will be tested. In addition, an important stage of sea trials will be the verification of navigation and communication systems, as well as the operation of the helicopter complex," the message says.
It is expected that the nuclear-powered vessel will be handed over to the customer, Rosatom State Corporation, by the end of this year.
The nuclear icebreakers of Project 22220 with a capacity of 60 MW are currently the largest and most powerful in the world. They are needed to ensure Russian leadership in the Arctic. The length of the vessel will be 173.3 meters, width - 34 meters, displacement - 33.5 thousand tons. These icebreakers will be able to conduct caravans of ships in Arctic conditions, breaking through ice up to three meters thick. They will ensure the transportation of vessels with hydrocarbon raw materials from the fields of the Yamal, Gydan peninsulas and from the shelf of the Kara Sea to the markets of the countries of the Asia-Pacific region.
The lead nuclear icebreaker of the project 22220 "Arctic", built at the Baltic Plant, was transferred to Rosatom in October 2020.
