The newest mine defense ship conducted exercises in the Baltic Sea.
At the first stage of the exercises, the crew of the minesweeper Georgy Kurbatov discovered a "floating mine" with the help of sonar equipment. After that, he successfully destroyed it.
The next stage of the exercise was the destruction of an air target, the information support department of the press service of the Western Military District for the Baltic Fleet told the Military-Industrial Courier.
To defeat both targets, a 14.5-millimeter side-mounted machine gun and an AK-306 anti-aircraft artillery system were used.
The first raising of the flag on the newest mine defense ship "Georgy Kurbatov" project 12700 took place on August 19 in Baltiysk. In the near term, a series of several dozen such minesweepers will be built for the Navy.
The ships of this project are designed to combat, among other things, the so-called "smart" sea mines, which "Georgy Kurbatov" can detect both in water and in the sea soil. The Almaz Central Design Bureau designs them, and the Sredne-Nevsky Shipyard builds them.
The 12700 project has the world's largest monolithic fiberglass body formed by vacuum infusion. Thanks to this, the case is more durable, its service life is longer and at the same time the weight is much less.
