Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday, November 3, stressed the importance of creating new hypersonic weapons systems, high-power lasers and new robotic military complexes for the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.
"Now it is especially important to develop and implement the technologies necessary to create new hypersonic weapons systems, high—power lasers, robotic complexes that will be able to effectively counter potential military threats, which means they will further strengthen the security of our country," Putin said during a meeting with the leadership of the Defense Ministry and defense industry enterprises.
In addition, the President noted that the appearance of weapons based on new physical principles in Russia was a breakthrough in the field of military technology and helped to strengthen strategic parity.
According to Putin, "today the development and mass production of such effective high-tech innovative weapons is one of the key areas of development of the armed forces."
"I have repeatedly noted that thanks to the Russian military-industrial complex, fundamental and applied science, a very serious groundwork has been made in this direction. The tests carried out have convincingly confirmed the unique characteristics of the Peresvet laser installations, the Avangard and Dagger hypersonic complexes," the head of state said.
The President also pointed out that the development of advanced weapons should be fully reflected in the upcoming new state program until 2033.
On October 4, the Russian military conducted the second launch of a hypersonic Zircon missile from a nuclear submarine, this time from an underwater position. According to the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, the shooting was carried out on a conditional naval target. The flight of the "Zircon" corresponded to the specified parameters, it hit a conditional target. The means of objective control confirmed the successful defeat of the target by the missile.
On August 29, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu announced Russia's plans to modernize hypersonic weapons. In particular, it was about increasing its range, speed and accuracy. The Minister also noted that one of the most important issues at the moment is the adaptation of carriers to new types of weapons.
At the end of June, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that the Sarmat ICBM, the Zircon hypersonic missile and the new S-500 air defense system would soon be on combat duty. According to him, hypersonic weapons — Avangard and Dagger complexes - have already been put on combat duty.
In July 2020, Colonel Sergey Pankov, head of the Department of Advanced Interspecific Research and Special Projects of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, said that a technological breakthrough is expected in the near future in the field of laser and ultra-high frequency (microwave) weapons.
