In the future, the installation, which will appear 42 kilometers from Fairbanks and 177 kilometers from the Arctic Circle, should replace a coal-fired power plant, the operation of which is associated with environmental, logistical and financial difficulties. In the future, such reactors are supposed to be used to ensure energy stability in hard-to-reach regions.
The publication recalls that the Eilson base contains, in particular, F-16 Fighting Falcon and F-35 Lightning II fighters.
In August 2019 edition Space.com Referring to the Kilopower project manager at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico, Patrick McClure, reported that the American compact nuclear reactor of the same name, designed for lunar and Martian manned missions, may be ready for flight tests as early as 2022.
