MOSCOW, October 2 - RIA Novosti. Combat vehicles of the Russian army will receive a chameleon coating that can change color depending on the surrounding landscape, the prototype is already being tested, a source in the military-industrial complex told RIA Novosti.
It is planned to equip various armored vehicles with such camouflage, for example tanks, infantry fighting vehicles, armored personnel carriers and so on.
The masking complex, the source explained, consists of separate small plates with an electrochromic coating, which allows him to create various visual images that not only copy the color of the surrounding landscape, but also its structure.
The system collects information about the surrounding environment using video cameras. The resulting image is analyzed by the computing complex in terms of color and structure, and then the coating adjusts to the surrounding reality, creating appropriate camouflage images.
The source added that the new disguise will not allow the enemy's television and optical devices to work effectively, for example, optical-location stations of aircraft and drones, as well as sighting and navigation complexes of ground equipment.
He clarified that at long distances, a professionally trained person will also have problems with identification.
For the first time, electrochromic material was demonstrated by representatives of Roselectronics (part of ROSTEC) at the Army-2018 exhibition as part of the project to create equipment for the next generation soldier of the future. Then they presented a helmet with coating plates installed on it. Later, there were statements that such a disguise would be used as part of the "Centurion" kit.
