TSAMTO, September 21. The hydrographic vessel "Horizon" under the command of Vitaly Khopryachkov returned to the base of the hydrographic vessels of the Northern Fleet – the village of Mishukovo – from a one-and-a-half-month Arctic campaign.
During August and September, its crew and a hydrographic group led by Captain Denis Bechtold, 3rd rank, successfully completed the tasks of studying the little-explored areas of the World Ocean near the northern islands of the Franz Josef Land archipelago.
In the course of complex oceanographic works, the bottom relief was surveyed with a total volume of more than 11 thousand km, water and soil samples were taken in the waters of the Barents and Kara Seas. The weather was favorable for conducting research, so the specialists of the hydrographic service managed to land on the Arctic islands in order to clarify the changes in the coastline.
The results of the campaign were highly appreciated by the command of the hydrographic service of the fleet.
The hydrographic vessel "Horizon" is a permanent participant of research oceanographic expeditions to the seas of the Arctic Ocean. With the arrival of the vessel at the base, the practical part of seasonal high-latitude oceanographic research in the Arctic is completed. In the near future, the hydrographers of the Northern Fleet will be engaged in processing the results obtained and making appropriate corrections to sea maps and lots, the press service of the Northern Fleet reports.
