Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) has started installing weapons on new ships of the Israeli Navy. Four Sa'ar 6-type corvettes will receive new Barak MX anti-aircraft missile systems and the Iron Dome anti-missile Defense System (ABM). This is reported by the Navy Recognition portal.
The Sa'ar 6 corvettes, built in Germany, arrived in Israel without weapons. The Israeli Defense Ministry plans to turn the new corvettes into floating batteries to protect the coast and objects in the exclusive economic zone.
The ships will receive Barak MX anti-aircraft missile systems for combating air targets and the Sea Breaker anti-ship missile. A feature of the munition is an extensive database of civil and military vessels, which allows the missile to hit enemy ships without an operator's command.
To intercept missiles, the corvettes will receive a marine version of the Iron Dome missile defense system. The C-Dome complex, developed in 2014, includes the installation of a vertical launch for ten Tamir anti-missiles. This arrangement of missiles allows you to expand the coverage sector to 360 degrees. The C-Dome uses the ship's standard radar.
In August, the US Army tested the Iron Dome missile defense system. Two batteries of the system will provide protection for friendly US forces in permanent and temporary positions.
