Moscow. September 14. INTERFAX-The Russian Northern Fleet conducted maneuvers in the Kola Arctic, near the borders with Norway and Finland, with the participation of more than 3 thousand servicemen and about 500 units of military equipment.
"Practical actions under the general leadership of the commander of the Northern Fleet, Admiral Alexander Moiseev, were played out at military training grounds in the Kandalaksha and Pechengsky districts of the Murmansk Region, as well as on the Sredny and Rybachy peninsulas," the press service of the Northern Fleet of the Russian Federation reported on Tuesday.
The Arctic expeditionary group conducted an offensive operation to defeat a conditional enemy in the Kola Arctic, the press service said. The exercises fulfilled the tasks of protecting the Arctic island zone and the sea coast of the Russian Federation.
"They simultaneously involved more than 3 thousand servicemen and about 500 units of weapons and military equipment, including "Arctic" T-80BVM tanks, multiple rocket launchers, self-propelled artillery, tracked armored personnel carriers and all-terrain vehicles. The Su-24 bombers of the separate mixed aviation regiment of the Northern Fleet Air Force and Air Defense Association provided air support to the troops," the press service said.
"The transition to the offensive of the land and coastal forces of the fleet became the final stage of the practical part of the exercise with the Arctic expeditionary group, which continues continuously at the polar military ranges for several days," the fleet said.
On September 9, the Russian Northern Fleet announced the start of major maneuvers in the Arctic. They involve about 50 ships, 120 aircraft and helicopters, about 8 thousand military personnel. Practical actions of the forces of the Northern Fleet will be held in the waters of the Barents, Kara, Chukchi and East Siberian Seas, the Laptev Sea, in the area of the Novosibirsk Islands, the archipelago of France-Joseph Land, the press service of the Northern Fleet reported.
On Tuesday, the press service of the Northern Fleet reported that the Bastion complex on the island of Alexandra Land (Franz Josef Land archipelago) fired a cruise missile at a target in the Barents Sea during the exercises.
