"Within the framework of the joint strategic exercise of the armed forces of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus" West-2021", the crews of Su-27 fighter jets of the Baltic Fleet intercepted cruise missiles of a simulated enemy, " the fleet reported.
The press service clarified that a pair of fighters on duty were lifted into the air from the Chkalovsk airfield in the Kaliningrad Region at the command of the air defense forces on duty, during the testing of the episode, the pilots destroyed the missiles with guided air - to-air missiles.
"The missile launches were carried out in a well-defined area of aerial firing over the sea range of the Baltic Fleet. For the period of firing in the area of the sea range, traffic was restricted for all aircraft and sea vessels, " the press service added.
The joint strategic exercises of the Russian Federation and Belarus "West-2021" are held on September 10-16 at the military training grounds of Belarus and Russia. About 200 thousand people, more than 80 planes and helicopters, up to 760 units of military equipment will take part in them. The scenario of the exercises involves responding to the aggravation of the international situation and possible aggression against the Union State. The Russian and Belarusian sides have repeatedly stated the defensive nature of the upcoming maneuvers.
